String Sounds was founded by professional cellist and teacher Ilona Hepburn, with the aim of creating high-quality, inspiring musical opportunities for young string players.
Ilona is a professional cellist and educator based in the North West, with a rich and varied performing career spanning chamber music, orchestral work and solo appearances. She has performed for distinguished audiences including the late Queen and the Pope, appeared on television, and toured extensively with artists such as Russell Watson and Lee Memphis King. At the heart of Ilona’s work is a deep love of chamber music, performing regularly across the region with her ensemble, Lucia Strings.
Alongside her performing career, Ilona is a passionate and experienced teacher, working with young musicians of all ages and abilities. She is committed to nurturing not only musical progress, but confidence, individuality and a genuine love of music
This ethos is at the centre of String Sounds, Ilona’s music courses for young string players. Designed to be inspiring, inclusive and genuinely enjoyable, they offer a multi-dimensional musical experience including string orchestra, chamber music, masterclasses, music theory and creative games, culminating in public performances across the local community.
Open to players of any level, String Sounds courses provide a space where young musicians can develop their skills, build confidence and feel part of a supportive musical community — all while having fun.
We believe that musical growth comes not only from practice, but from shared experiences, creativity and enjoyment.
Our courses promote:
- Individuality
- Positive mental wellbeing
- A sense of belonging
- Musical confidence through performance
